Work Experience
Ballyorney Vets
For my first work experience placement in TY I went to Ballyorney Veterinary Clinic from the 4th to the 8th of December.
Despite the dramatic drop in tempatures the veterinary practice stayed open and the two vets, Larry Dunne and Cormac Hasset kept working through the tough conditions.
On Monday I arrived to the clinic at 8 o'clock and was greeted by Larry Dunne. As well owning the practice he is one of the top vets in Europe in the field of storing horse and cattle embryos and for artificial insemination. Throughout the week i spent a lot of time with Larry and was facinated by the work. I also learned that as much as vets give life they also must take life away in unfortunate situations. During my time with the vets I saw a cat put down after a car accident and a terminally ill boxer be put to sleep. On the last day or my work experience I went with Cormac to put a horse to sleep. Although I didnt meet the owner who was former U2 manager Paul McGuinness I empathized for him as the horse was very old and he had owned him a long time.
Although they have a clinic in Enniskerry most of their work is done on call outs all over wicklow. Each day of my work experience brought something different. On Monday we tested hundreds of cattle for Tb, on Tuesday we x-rayed a racehorsein Cormers Raceyard and gave a yound race horse fluids in Durkans Raceyard. On wednesday I helped Cormac in the surgery with various small animals. On Thursday I went between the vets and went with whoever was busiest, this was by far the coldest day. On friday morning I went with Cormac and i watched as he castrated a young bull this was facinated and a unique experience. I then stayed with Cormac in the surgery to do three neuterings on Dogs and help Larry flush embryos out of cattle and store them in liquid nitrogen at -196 degrees celcius.
The whole experience was facinating and I hope to get the LC points to do veterinary in UCD.

Radiology
For my second work experience placement of TY I went to St. Vincent's University Hospital. For the week I was with Dr Eric Heffernan and Dr Gerald Healy. They are both part of the radiology department. Radiology is the science that uses medical imaging to diagnose and treat diseases. Imaging methods such as x-ray, ultrasound and computed tomography (CT) is used during procedures.
Unfortunatley I was only able to do three days work experience. I lost Thursday and Friday of the week because of 'The beast from the east'. Although I only got to do three days I learnt lots. I got to see surgeries such as angioplasty in interventional radiology. Other proceedures that I saw includes x-ray guided surgeries to unblock blood vessels and widen blood vessels that had narrowed. The most interesting surgery that I saw was a procedure that blocked a number of capillaries that were supplying blood to a tumour. This killed the tumour.
I really enjoyed the experience and it showed me another career in medicine that I am interested in.

Le haghaidh mo thaití oibre d'obrigh mé in ospidéal Naomh Uinseann. D'oibrigh mé i roinn x-ghá le doctuir Heffernan. Bhreathaigh mé air máinliacht a rinne sé. Bhí an roinn x-ghá an-eagraithe mar bhí sé an ghnóthach gach lá. Bhí Bach Dunne sa roinn an chinealta agus d'fhreagair siad mo cheisteanna go leír faoi bpost.
Is maith lion an triú lá a charity mé San ospideal . Ar and drochuair this an sneachta ar an déardaoin. B'fhiú é an taithí agus ba mhaith lion a bheith ag Obadiah Ann sa todhchaí.

Festina Lente
For my community service in Ty I went to Festina Lente riding school. Throughout the week I help with the work in the yard which included mucking out stables and sweeping the yard.
I also helped prepare the horses for the lessons which involved brushing them, cleaning them and tacking up. Becasue of my experience in helping the RDA I was able to assist in some of the lessons and help children and children and adults with disabilities get the most out of their time in Festina.
I thoroughly enjoyed the week and am very thankful of Festina for taking me for the week it was a great experience.

Contracting
As and extra week of work experience I went with my uncle. He is a self employed builder/ contractor and he primarily does house renovation, extensions or house building. For the three days I was with him I helped him complete various jobs and learnt a lot. As with my work experience with a vet I enjoyed the hands on nature of the work as I prefer practical work to working on a computer.
As my uncle is a trained carpenter and plumber and has over 20 years experience it was great to learn from him as he learnt from my grandad when he was my age.
